THE IMPORTANCE OF FOOD PACKAGING IN A FOOD INDUSTRY

ABSTRACT

Food packaging is simply a way of packaging of food, that requires protein, tampering resistance and special physicals, chemical or biological needs, it also shows us how nutritional information on food is being consumed, food packaging also has it’s objectives e.g we have the physical protection, barrier protection, information, transmission, marketing, security, convenience, portion, control etc.

CHAPTER ONE

1.1    INTRODUCTION

Food packaging needs to be taking care extensively. Accordingly to (Brody A.L et al 1997), he said there is a way by which food is packaged properly, food packaging is also an act of preparing food in such a way that is prevented from contaminating the environment and at the same time helping in distribution and marketing.

Food packaging accordingly to (Brody A.L et al 1997), he also went further to say that food packaging is an area of specialization on it’s own. The packaging of food has undergone a resolution in recent times. Food packaging has its several objectives, without it’s objectives, the packaging of food are as follows; we have the physical protection where the food that is enclosed in the package, may require protection from, among other things, shock , vibration, compression, temperature etc. We have the barrier protection from oxygen, water, vapour, dust etc, is often required

Food packaging is a sealed pack of diced port from tesco, food packaging has it’s various types and containers, such as packaging types of container and food examples. He also went further to said that there are various packaging types, type of container by food should be well packaged also that there is still food examples which is very important too. Robertson G.L (2002).

Pallets

Tertiary:– A serves of boxes on a single pallet used to transport from the manufacturer Plant  to the distributor care.

Wrapper tertiary:- Used to wrap the boxes on the pallet for transport.

Primary Packaging:- Is simply the act of packaging that holds the food that is being processed.

While

Secondary packaging combines the primary packages into one box that is already made

Tertiary Packaging:- is simply the combination of all the secondary packages into one pallet.

Packaging does not only ensure that foods contains and maintains the amount and forms of the required ingredient and nutrients but also improves the sensory quality and colour stability.

1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

It has been demonstrated that food packaging can retard product deterioration, retain the beneficial effects of processing, extend shelf-life and maintain or increase the quality and safety of food . Therefore it is important that food packaging materials should possess proper mechanical, thermal and optical properties for foods. In addition anti-microbial and barrier functions against gases, vapour and aroma are also important in food packaging materials.

The principal roles of packaging are to protect food products from outside influences and damages, to contain the food, and to provide consumers with ingredient and nutritional information. Packaging maintains the benefits of food processing after the process is completed, enabling food to travel safely for long distances from their point of origin and still be wholesome at the time of consumption. It is in view of these that this study was conducted to investigate the effects processing methods and packaging materials on the quality attributes of Suya meat.

1.3.   PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The main objective of the research is to identify the  importance of food packaging in a food Industry.  Other objectives include

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The particular research questions that this study will try to answer are the following;

Q1: How important are packaging in food processing for the expectations of food product healthiness that they create to consumers?

Q2: Does the consumers’ level of involvement with particular food products affect their reaction towards the different package attributes for the healthiness expectations that they create?

Q3: Does the consumers’ healthy eating lifestyle affect their reaction towards the different food package expectations that they create?

 1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

The study will be beneficial to  business men particularly those in the food sector on how to package food products so as to increase sale and increase customer base.

The study will also contribute to existing literature.

1.6 DEFINITION OF THE TERM

Packaging: Packaging can be defined as the overall stages the quantity of the product, appeals to and attracts the consumer; it should be within an average economic cost. (Ugwuanyi Gorgina). She also defined packaging as the overall stages in a product planning involving designing and producing the container or wrapper for a product. Packaging is said to be container or wrapper that holds a product or a group of product. (Jane, 1998).

Package: This is the material used in covering the product after production which also is part of the production. These are materials used to protect the product from damages during distribution and hygienic for consumption and also serve as covering to the product.

Distribution: this is the movement of good from the manufacture to the location where the product is demanded. It is simply the movement of goods from one place to another.
