THE EFFECT OF INDUSTRIAL ACTION ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS A CASE STUDY OF SOME SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOL
ABSTRACT
The research is set to examine the effect of industrial action on the academic performance of students in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. . The research employed random sampling technique to select Respondents for the study. One hundred (100) respondents were selected, questionnaires and interviews were employed to draw information from respondents. The findings showed that the incessant strikes action in secondary schools in Nigeria have disrupted the academic calendar and this has affected students’ academic pursuit and performance100% of the respondents have experienced Industrial action s and 75% admitted that Industrial action s have had negative influence on their academics. The study suggests and recommends that university students should engage themselves in tutorial classes or self-study during the strike action to keep them abreast with academics at resumption, their parents or guardians should ensure that they encourage students engagement in academic activities rather than domestic chores while the strike last.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
As a student one deserve to know what to do in the bid to enhance or explore effective performance in his/her educational aspect. It is probably pertinent to even reassure oneself about who a student is in to be doing such as individual under discussion find himself or herself in a college, polytechnics or university setting charges with the task of acquiring knowledge, skills and trying to modify his academic performance the role of living in the midst of other colleague and getting about the acquisition of the desired knowledge which are modified and influenced by both the materials and human features of the environments. The profile for this presentation consists of consideration of the effects of industrial action on student academic performance in secondary schools in Nigeria.
The education sub-sector especially secondary schools in Nigeria have witnessed in recent time incessant closures due to strike actions. The effect of these repeated closures of schools and academic programs on students’ academic performance can better be imagined than described. Secondary school education in Nigeria has thus suffered tremendous setbacks as a result of strike actions. This has always subjected the students to pitiable conditions, disrupting academic programs, giving students’ undeserved extension in their study years, poor students’ concentration on academic programs and poor teacher-student relationships amongst others. Consequently, students’ academic performance has comparatively become so low while various forms of examination malpractice are on the increase. The situation has assumed such an alarming dimension that it transits to tertiary institutions.
In the education sector, strike can be compared to students’ examination malpractice, corruption and other social vices in the society. According to Hornby (2001), strike is a period of time when an organized group of employees (teachers) stops working because of a disagreement over payment or certain conditions. Those that are often involved in these strike actions are described as strikers. Strike is a social ill not different from corruption because it eats into students’ time which makes it difficult for students to be fully and properly ‘baked’ within the designated educational time frame. As a result of students academic performance that are ill-equipped in both character and learning are turned out to the society. The action (strike) usually poses a lot of negative effects on the student’s academic performance. This is because the period that should have been used to teach the students is spent at home all in the name of strike. This makes it impossible to cover the syllabus and at the end of the day the student’s come out of school with lesser knowledge than they ought to have acquired, thereby making it very hard for them to compete with their counterparts that finished from private schools.
Asaolu (2010) opined that effective learning in school occur when the stakeholders adequately perform their roles. This means that effective learning can be hindered when there is conflict among the stakeholders especially when one fails to perform its required responsibility and disrespect others’ rights. Good human relations are important to teachers and students’ well being as well as effective learning (Asuquo, 2010). However, conflict in the school setting as a result of strike action can disrupts academic progress and adversely affects effective learning among the students. (Adetiba, 2012).
However, it was against this background that the researcher intends to carry out more research on effect of strike action on the academic performance of students in some selected secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State
This project attempts to examine the effect of strike on the academic performance of schools in Nigeria at large and Oredo L.G.A. of Edo State in particular. The secondary school community is composed of many staff unions; strike by any of these unions has a tendency of lowering the standard of education.
In this work, attention will be paid to the impact of Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) strike action on student’s academic performance. This is primary because NUT performs the initial functions of inculcating knowledge on Nigeria secondary schools students.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The main of the study is to examine the effect of Industrial Strike on academic performance of secondary school students in Nigeria. Specific objectives of the study are:
- To determine the extent to which the strike action has affected students’ academic performance in Oredo LGA of Edo State
- To determine the possible ways of minimizing the negative effect of Industrial action on students’ academic performance.
- To examine what government can do to reduce the incessant strike action to the barest minimum?
1.4 Research Questions
This study sought the following research question:
- Whether or not Industrial action actions affect Secondary school students’ academic performance in Oredo LGA of Edo State
- Whether or Not there are possible ways of minimizing the effects of Industrial action on student’s academic performance?
- Whether or Not Government has roles to play in reduce the persistent strike action in Nigeria?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
(i). There is no significant relationship between Industrial action and the academic performance of students.
1.6 Significance of Study
This research will add to the body of knowledge by enlightening the students on how they can cope with the unfavorable Industrial action, so as to enable them perform as expected in their studies. Furthermore, this study would also help to further research and add to knowledge build-up in this area of study. Again from this study, students would be able to device exemplary means of ensuring excellent performance even with the occurrence of a strike action by the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT). Policy makers may also find the outcome of the study useful for future planning.
